Barbara Gamper

In my recent and current work I am exploring issues of displacement and ‘placelessness’ that relate to the physical as well as virtual migration of humans. I create fictional portraits of futuristic, post-apocalyptic situations and place them in landscapes that allow no defined cultural or historical identifications so that a sense of nowhere and yet everywhere can arise. The bodies I use for these situations become a metaphor for the contemporary virtual nomad and open up a question about the relationship between humankind and nature - body and place. I mainly work with the moving image using lens-based media as well as live performance. I am interested in staging the body alongside video work, where this body reappears, and in creating an almost theatrical setting, but outside of the time and space frame of the theatre.
